hey anons! this will make me incredibly obvious, but um, i'm very happy to start troisbang up again - i mentioned in the last part that i was going to, in fact. i'm kind of busy with rl atm but i was going to open up signups at the end of january :) i'm really glad there's so much enthusiasm for it!

question for everyone, though: would you all prefer it if i moved it to dw, or shall we just keep it on lj? i'm happy to do it either way!

This one was the first of the batch for the day, Dongwoo/Myungsoo. To contextualise, Dongwoo is an aspiring writer while Myungsoo is a chef at a restaurant Dongwoo visits regularly. The story follows them as they meet and develop the beginnings of a relationship, and Myungsoo inspires Dongwoo to write a new book.

I felt for the most part that the author built this AU quite believably, but there were definitely a few issues where Dongwoo was concerned. It is really unrealistic to be a full-time writer. Dongwoo's only income supplement seems to involve writing childrens' books, and this also didn't sit well with me. While I'm not an expert, I don't think it's as simple as childrens' books being easier to write and release than other types of books.

On that note, there were other instances of the worth of childrens' books apparently being undermined in this fic, with Dongwoo saying things like:
At least he can bullshit writing well enough to pen some shitty childrens’ books.
desperately attempting to scrape by on commissions and authoring childrens’ book which children could never actually read (or understand)
First off, if children can't understand those books, then he's probably not writing them very well. Also, childrens' books are personally a lot more witty, insightful, imaginative and enjoyable than many novels or youth fiction books I have read. Some examples: The Giving Tree, Where the Wild Things Are, Diary of a Wombat, Shaun Tan's works, Graeme Base's books and of course Dr Seuss. I'm sorry to go off on a tangent while reviewing but this really got to me orz

On to the writing style -- all the basics seemed to be there, though at times the style had hiccups and didn't flow very well. There were sometimes too many sentences with similar lengths as opposed to alternating styles to make it read smoothly, and some needed extra commas or to be split up. One example:
So now he’s living a very tragic, very cliché life desperately attempting to scrape by on commissions and authoring childrens’ book which children could never actually read (or understand) and making pennies doing something he hates when he’s trying to make millions doing something else entirely.
The author also tended to use short sections consecutively at some parts, which sometimes interrupted the flow of the story and took away from the impact that they otherwise would have had.

These things being said, there were a few lines which were done beautifully:
Alright, Myungsoo doesn’t actually know his name but he does know that the guy always comes in with his hair looking like it had a vicious fight with the blow dryer (and lost) and his teeth looking like they got into a heated squabble with the dentist (and won).
“I’m not stalking you!” he splutters. “I swear! I’m a writer—not a stalker—”

One issue I had particularly was with this part of the narration:
It really isn’t Dongwoo’s fault he hasn’t eaten in two days. Starving children in Africa have to go days without eating, right? And those weird black-lipped kids with the pins and beads and hoops stuck through their skin stay inside and play World of Warcraft for several days straight without eating, right?
I was immensely uncomfortable with the comparison with starving children in Africa, but I'm afraid that if I go into it anymore this will end up on all sorts of political tangents so I will refrain. The second comparison also put me off because of the stereotypes and prejudices it is laden with. I felt the point could have been made well enough without these being mentioned.

Character-wise, I liked both Myungsoo and Dongwoo's sense of disillusionment, because I felt it meshed well with the writing style in this fic. Myungsoo had the right amount of being sarcastic and closed off/introverted -- even though he speaks to Dongwoo first, being obviously curious about him, it's Dongwoo who initiates all the later activity and interaction. I felt Myungsoo was generally closer to his canonical counterpart than Dongwoo, who seemed a bit too brash to me.

Aside from this I felt that the characters were both a bit too similar. I'm not sure if it was more the narration style or the way they were characterised, probably both, but they read a bit the same, particularly in the beginning half of the fic. While it is conceivable for two characters to have the same quality of disillusionment, I felt they needed to handle it differently. I would have liked more contrast and complement between them, as they are also quite different in real life.

The plot was generally paced well and believably, though I was rather surprised at how quickly Dongwoo took the initiative to start walking Myungsoo home (i.e. after meeting once). This was especially because the first meeting seemed like there was more awkwardness between them than sparks flying. From that point onwards things seemed to happen very quickly. I wasn't too sure why Myungsoo was so cold about Dongwoo not turning up for a week because they hadn't exactly known each other long, and here I wasn't fully convinced by the way their relationship was building.

However I'm glad that in line with the overall tone of the fic, there wasn't any jumping into each other's arms at the end. It finished believably and with the impression that this relationship would progress and develop into the future, beyond the scope of the fic's immediate timeline.

(I belong to fandom where most of the writers feel intimidated by the two outspoken BNFs so no one really posts very often).
